ABOUT UKOsprey Information. Com
In January 2023 with the news of Pete Dee’s (Duffields) death, who was the owner and webmaster of United Kingdom Ospreys, an unofficial Database. The decision was made following conversations with several people, to try to carry on his work. His site which for many was the go to place for information about uk Ospreys, was destined to come to an end. So UKOsprey Information.com was created.(UK osprey Information) To supplement the Website, we started a Facebook group of the same name (UKOsprey Information | Facebook), this allows us to have active documents which we can update easily, such as a Sightings Map. This is also the place where members can leave information, which can be added to the website when verified.
The Website has been populated with data gleaned from many places, credit for which is acknowledged copyright credits
We see the website as being there as a reference point for all. It is important to remember this is a Website which displays Known/Public information. Prior to setting up the website we spoke to Tim Mackrill from the Roy Dennis Foundation his only request was that we had a link to reporting Colour Ringed Birds, which we have done with links on both the Website and Facebook pages, in fact, every page on the Website has a link.
Please note all sightings of Colour Banded Ospreys should be reported to The Roy Dennis Foundation, using the following link, https://www.roydennis.org/report-a-colour-ringed-osprey/.
For many enthusiasts having a reference point underpins the experience, being able to look at Histories and Family Trees adds depth. The primary purpose behind the Website and Facebook group is to enhance the Osprey Watching Experience and in doing so encourage and support Osprey conservation.
This group follows the George Waterstone principle, sharing information is the best way to safeguard and enhance the conservation of UK Ospreys. We gather and share non-sensitive information.
In June 2023, United Kingdom Ospreys came to an end and is no longer available, However, it will survive it’s virtual demise, it will always be recognised as the foundation of UKOsprey Information and Pete’s name will frequently be mentioned. and in doing so Pete Dee’s legacy will live on.
Each piece of information we share has been produced, shared and collated by groups/projects and foundations, which are not always acknowledged in the day to day running of the Facebook group and in each post, however, without organisations like The Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation. individual projects and Ringer/Ringing Groups this information would not exist and therefore could not be shared. We also rely on Webcam Watchers who share observations and events with the group. We have been fortunate to have several extremely experienced and knowledgeable people take up the role of Group Expert in the Facebook Group and have received much help and advice from Our Facebook Admin team. There is a core of Group Members who have been integral to the success of the venture, who prefer to remain in the background and we also thank them.
